Large-Scale Coral Restoration Across Bali’s Reefs

This month, Ocean Gardener achieved another major milestone in its reef restoration efforts across Bali. The team successfully planted 8,189 corals, helping expand and strengthen damaged reef ecosystems while supporting the long-term recovery of marine biodiversity.
To protect these newly restored reefs, Ocean Gardener also carried out extensive predator control, removing 222 crown-of-thorns starfish (COTS) and 2,044 Drupella snails—two of the most destructive coral predators that can severely impact reef health if left unmanaged.
These large-scale restoration and maintenance efforts demonstrate Ocean Gardener’s continued commitment to protecting Indonesia’s coral reefs. By combining active coral planting with regular monitoring and predator removal, the team is helping build healthier, more resilient reef ecosystems for the future. 🪸🌊💙

Promoting Coexistence Between Sailors and Iberian Orcas

This month, Iberian Orcas highlighted an extraordinary encounter that challenges common perceptions of these remarkable animals. During fieldwork for the Save the Iberian Orca Campaign, the team documented Estrella, also known as White Gladis, calmly approaching the research boat while carrying the head of a tuna. She left the prey beside the vessel and appeared to wait, offering researchers a rare opportunity to observe a behavior that may reflect curiosity, social learning, or communication.
Rather than reinforcing sensationalized narratives about Iberian orcas, this observation highlights the complexity of their behavior and the importance of understanding these critically endangered animals through science. The team emphasized that while interactions between orcas and sailing vessels can present challenges, they should be approached with knowledge, respect, and responsible navigation rather than fear.
Throughout the campaign, Iberian Orcas continued working alongside partner organizations to provide sailors with practical guidance on navigating safely in areas where orcas are present. By combining scientific research, public awareness, and conservation outreach, the organization continues to promote the coexistence of people and one of Europe’s most endangered marine mammal populations. 🐋🌊💙
Summer Brings New Energy to the Polar Bears

This month, summer fully arrived at the Cochrane Polar Bear Habitat, transforming the landscape with lush greenery and wildflowers. As temperatures increased, resident polar bears Ganuk and Henry adapted just as they would in the wild by shedding their thick winter coats, reducing activity during the hottest hours of the day, and spending much more time swimming to stay cool.
Both bears have been enjoying their spacious habitat, particularly their 4-hectare private lake and the three pools available throughout their enclosures. Whether swimming, exploring their 9.7-hectare habitat, or relaxing in their air-conditioned indoor areas, Ganuk and Henry continue to display natural seasonal behaviors that reflect how polar bears live during the warmer months in the Arctic.
The team also carried out the bears’ annual summer weigh-in, confirming that both remain in excellent condition. Ganuk currently weighs 527 kg, while Henry weighs 530 kg, demonstrating the high standard of care provided throughout the year.
This month highlights how Cochrane Polar Bear Habitat continues to provide an environment that encourages natural behaviors while ensuring the health and wellbeing of its two iconic residents. 🐻❄️☀️💙

This month, Shark Guardian strengthened its work with the local diving community by organizing several outreach events focused on ethical and responsible diving practices around sharks. The organization also highlighted the growing importance of citizen science and marine research, encouraging divers to actively contribute to shark conservation by recording sightings and collecting valuable field observations.
To further support these efforts, Shark Guardian developed a series of guideline posters outlining best practices for diving with sharks. Community Action for Cleaner Beaches
R.O.L.E Foundation x ClubOcean®
This month, the R.O.L.E. Foundation organized a beach cleanup at Sekeh Beach, bringing together 60 participants, including students from SD 6 Pecatu, Bali WISE students, staff, and volunteers. The initiative focused on restoring the coastline while encouraging environmental responsibility and community participation.
Together, participants collected 333.97 kg of inorganic waste. The largest share consisted of non-recyclable residue (40.7%), followed by glass bottles (18.8%) and hard plastics (18.5%), highlighting the continued challenge of marine litter along Bali’s beaches.
After the cleanup, all collected waste was carefully sorted by the R.O.L.E. Foundation team. Recyclable materials, including glass, plastics, rubber slippers, and aluminum cans, were sent to local Waste Banks, while the remaining non-recyclable waste was transported to landfill for proper disposal.
Through initiatives like this, the R.O.L.E. Foundation continues to combine environmental action with community engagement, helping protect coastal ecosystems while inspiring more people to take part in preserving Bali’s beaches. 🌊♻️💙

Sea Turtle Nesting Season Reaches Its Peak

This month, DEKAFOK focused its efforts on one of the busiest periods of the year as the sea turtle nesting season intensified. With more than 280 nests now recorded along the coastline, the team and its volunteers have been working around the clock to protect nesting females, monitor beaches, and provide care for injured turtles.
Although educational activities slowed with the start of the summer holidays, DEKAFOK still delivered environmental awareness sessions to 245 students and provided specialized training for public institutions, including beach gendarmerie teams. The organization also marked World Environment Day by taking part in three cleanup events, collecting a total of 180 kg of waste while promoting cleaner coastlines.
On the rehabilitation side, June brought encouraging results. Seven sea turtles that had successfully completed their treatment were released back into the sea, including three green sea turtles fitted with satellite tracking devices to help researchers monitor their movements after release. Two green sea turtles remain under intensive care at the rehabilitation center. One of the rehabilitated turtles also gained international attention after its recovery story went viral on social media, helping raise awareness for sea turtle conservation worldwide.
As nesting activity continues to increase, DEKAFOK remains fully dedicated to protecting nests, rehabilitating injured turtles, and preparing for the exciting arrival of hatchlings expected next month. 🐢🌊💙

A Month of Scientific Progress, Challenges, and National Recognition

This month, Morigenos carried out extensive fieldwork in Slovenian waters alongside colleagues from Denmark, continuing its long-term research on bottlenose dolphins. The collaborative surveys aim to improve understanding of the local dolphin population, with the team looking forward to sharing new scientific findings once the collected data has been fully analysed.
June also brought a deeply emotional moment for the organization. Morigenos responded to the first recorded live stranding of a bottlenose dolphin in Slovenia in the organization’s 25-year history. The female dolphin was found in critical condition, suffering from severe malnutrition and health complications. Despite the team’s immediate efforts to stabilize her, document her condition, and collect valuable scientific data, she sadly did not survive. A post-mortem examination will help researchers better understand the causes behind this unprecedented event.
The month concluded with inspiring news: Morigenos was awarded the 2026 Rado Smerdu Award, Slovenia’s highest national recognition for nature conservation. Presented during the organization’s 25th anniversary year, this prestigious award celebrates Morigenos’ outstanding contribution to dolphin research, marine conservation, and the long-term protection of Slovenia’s marine environment. 🐬🏆💙

Record Releases and Strengthening Seabird Conservation

This month, SANCCOB celebrated a major conservation milestone with the successful release of 246 seabirds back into the wild, including 208 African Penguins rehabilitated during May and June. This remarkable achievement follows one of the busiest breeding seasons in the organization’s history, during which SANCCOB cared for more than twice the number of penguin eggs ever recorded in a single season while maintaining the highest standards of veterinary care and biosecurity.
Alongside rehabilitation efforts, SANCCOB continued to strengthen long-term conservation across the Benguela ecosystem. Working closely with partners in Namibia, the organization expanded knowledge-sharing and practical training for wildlife rehabilitators, park rangers, and conservation professionals. These initiatives focused on emergency seabird rescue, rehabilitation techniques, biosecurity, and wildlife response, helping build regional capacity to better protect threatened seabird populations.
SANCCOB also highlighted the growing challenges facing marine ecosystems, emphasizing the importance of sustainable fisheries and international collaboration to secure the future of African Penguins and other seabird species. Through rehabilitation, research, education, and regional partnerships, the organization continues to play a vital role in safeguarding some of the world’s most threatened marine birds. 🐧🌊💙
